ACT Residual
This is an institutional testing program, an on-campus testing program provided for enrolled or admitted students under age 21 who were unable to test on a national ACT test date. Test results are reported only to ETSU Admission's Office. There are no student score reports given, nor can additional score reports be generated to report scores to any other college. Check with the University Testing Center for test fees.

COMPASS Freshman Placement Exam
This is an institutional testing program. It is required by the Tennessee Board of Regents (T.B.R.). This exam is administered to place students in the appropriate college level courses. COMPASS tests academic preparation in three areas: Writing, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics. Students may call University Advisement at (423)439-5244 for additional information. Test is administered by Appointment on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday throughout the year.
A $20 non-refundable fee is charged for students who wish to challenge their DSP placement based on ACT/SAT scores or prior COMPASS test results. Students who are required to take the COMPASS test for initial placement in DSP courses are not required to pay the $20 fee.
For information on COMPASS Exam:
Go to www.etsu.edu. In the box that says search terms, type in COMPASS and click go. This will bring up information and study guides.
To schedule to take the COMPASS test:
- Go to http://testingcenter.etsu.edu
- Click Registration (on the left side)
- Click Create Account
- Fill in all blanks, then click Create Account
- Check your email. You should have an email from the University Testing Center. Click the link in the email.
- Click Registration (on the left side) and log in using the username and password you created.
- Click Search for Tests
- Select COMPASS Freshman, the month and year you would like to take the test. Click Search.
- Choose a test date. Click Register for this test at the bottom of the page
- Enter your Student ID (your E-number) without the E. (For example, E00123456 would be entered as 00123456) Click Confirm Registration
- You will see a page that states that you have successfully registered for the test. Print this page for your records
- The test is given at the University Testing Center, Campus Center Building Rm. 208, 439-6708
- For the location of the University Center Building, go to www.etsu.edu/maps/ the Campus Center Building is building 12 on the map.
California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST)
This is a required test mandated by the University System of Tennessee Board of Regents for students obtaining a degree from an institution within the system. The exam is a test to assess a student's knowledge in three broad academic areas: Humanities, Social Science, and Natural Sciences.
To schedule your senior exit exam:
- Go to http://testingcenter.etsu.edu
- Click Registration (on the left side)
- Click Create Account
- Fill in all blanks, then click Create Account
- Check your email. You should have an email from the University Testing Center. Click the link in the email.
- Click Registration (on the left side) and log in using the username and password you created.
- Click Search for Tests
- Select Senior Exit Exam, the month and year you would like to take the test. Click Search.
- Choose a test date. Click Register for this test at the bottom of the page.
- Enter your Student ID (your E-number) without the E. (For example, E00123456 would be entered as 00123456) Click Confirm Registration
- You will see a page that states that you have successfully registered for the test. Print this page for your records.
- The test is given at the University Testing Center, Campus Center Building Rm. 208, 439-6708
Distance Education exams
Email the Testing Center that you wish to take the exam off-site. A form will be emailed to be filled out and send back to the Testing Center. After the Testing Center receives the completed form, the university will be contacted with the information to administer the exam.
PCAT - Pharmacy College Admissions Test
The Pharmacy Technical Certification Test is given four times during the calendar year. This test is required by the Pharmacy Technical Certification Board to be certified as a Pharmacy Technician. Tests are given in January June August and October.
PRAXIS I/PPST - Pre-Professional Skills Test
A candidate who is admitted to an approved teacher preparation program must complete the Praxis Series I tests: Writing, Reading and Mathematics. Please call 1-800-853-6773. Press 3 to go directly to Operator. www.ets.org/praxis.
TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language
The purpose of the TOEFL test is to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. Please call 1-800-468-6335. Press 3 to go directly to Operator. www.ets.org/toefl.
