General Policies

The yearly testing calendar is coordinated with ETSU’s school calendar, and with state and national testing dates. It is recommended that prospective registrants check with the colleges or universities which they are considering to find out the required test needed for admission and the deadline for score submission.

Testing Programs
National tests are usually administered on Saturdays.
General Admission tests are done Monday to Friday.
Professional tests are administered on a seasonal basis.
We also offer proctor testing for students enrolled in Distance Education.

Computer Based-Testing
East Tennessee State University, in cooperation with Educational Testing Service (ETS) is proud to be designated as a National Computer-Based Testing (CBT) site. Computer-Based Tests are proving to be very popular with students, schools, colleges and associations because they:
  • Make it possible for students to schedule tests at their convenience, rather than limiting testing to a few unmovable dates;
  • Can be taken in a more comfortable setting and with fewer people than in large, paper-and-pencil administrations;
  • Allow faster score reporting, and in some cases test takers can see results as soon as they finish, as opposed to the four to six weeks that is usual for a national test;
  • Permit sending scores electronically to colleges, schools or licensing agencies.
Computer-Based Testing is offered year-round, with the exception of holidays. We test every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and occasionally on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The earliest reporting time is generally 8:30 am. We are usually booked two weeks in advance of today’s date.

National Tests
National testing programs are usually administered on Saturdays. Prospective registrants should obtain a bulletin and complete the enclosed application, along with a check or money order for the appropriate fee, and forward in the pre-addressed envelope to the testing program of their choice. For national tests, registration date deadlines are usually closed five weeks prior to the registrant’s test date choice. Scores are usually reported to the registrant and college(s) of their choice within four to seven weeks after each test date. Please refer to specific bulletin for registration, deadlines, and approximate score reporting dates.

Admission and ID Requirements
Photo ID is required for all exams administered in the Test Center. National exam programs may have specific identification policies that you are required to adhere to. You are responsible for knowing the ID policies for the exam you are taking.

The Examinee's name on the photo ID must exactly match the name on the examinee's record on the computer. Examinees must register for and take the test under the name that is shown on the acceptable identification documents that they present for identification at the test center. Name changes may not be made at the test center.

Primary IDs must be valid and must contain a recent, recognizable photograph and bear the examinee's signature. Examinees registering and taking the TOEFL or GRE whose citizenship is other than American must present a valid passport at the time of registration and testing.

Personal items but not limited to pagers, phones, digital and photographic devices are not permitted in the testing room. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in your scores being cancelled.

Children may not be brought to the Testing Center while you are taking an exam. Unsupervised children will be reported to Public Safety.
